Breakfast Chocolate Smoothie

This is our ever day semi-healthy chocolate smoothie. When I say every day, I mean every day. It’s kind of crazy but I make this smoothie every night so that it’s ready to go in the morning for J and me. Yes, we have the same thing every morning. There are a few reasons why:

  1. It is easy. So so easy. I don’t even have to think about it anymore or measure anything out.
  2. Lots of good fiber. You know why. It’s great for first thing in the morning.
  3. It has protein powder and actually fills you up.
  4. It is made with water and ice so you are also getting a good amount of water first thing in the morning.
  5. It’s so yummy!

Let’s get started. Again, I make this at night and put it in reusable travel coffee cups so they are ready to go in the morning. I use a Vitamix. We LOVE it. It is pricey but we have had ours for 5 years and have had no issues with it. It has paid for itself at this point. We use it every single day. I have linked it here. There are tons of models too, so research which one would best suit your needs. I do wish we had one that had a shorter container so that it fit under our cabinets better when it’s on the base, but it isn’t that big of a deal.

Fill your blender with about 2 cups of water. I like mine EXTRA cold and add about 10 ice cubes. Not needed though if you’re going to keep it in the fridge overnight.

Next add 2 T. of peanut butter, 2 T. of flax seed, 2 T. of cocoa powder and then protein powder. We use Orgain chocolate protein powder, but any chocolate protein powder will work just fine.

There are also variations of this that you can do. Switch out the flax seed for chia seed. Use almond butter instead of peanut butter. Add banana or frozen banana. I will add banana to J’s but I enjoy just having some chocolate-y peanut butter goodness in the morning. Take note that by adding flax seed or chia seed it will thicken a bit overnight. Some mornings I add a little milk to ours to thin it out a bit. Just depends!

Ingredients:

2 cups of water

2 T. of peanut butter

2 T. flax seed

2 T. cocoa powder

2 scoops of Orgain chocolate protein powder (or your choice of protein powder)

Ice cubes

All of these are approximations. Find what you like best after making it a few times. I have made it for several people and some like more peanut butter, or more cocoa powder. Just play around with it!

Pro Tip: Use this cup when you’re done with your smoothie for your coffee. That last little bit of chocolate smoothie tastes so good in it! Hot or iced!


**I don’t give this smoothie to our son. I don’t feel comfortable giving him protein powder just yet. I will post another chocolate smoothie that kids can have soon!
